A graduate teacher falls under job group K which is currently referred to as grade C2 designated as Secondary Teacher II.
TSC has addressed the long delays in the processing salaries for newly recruited teachers. The Commission has made changes to the procedures of posting, transfer, and deployment of teachers.
These tasks will now be done online, as opposed to the current tiresome manual process. Consequently, all newly employed teachers will no longer have to wait for three or so months to receive their first salaries.
According to the TSC appointment letter, the newly employed teacher remains on probation for a period of not less than six months.
In some cases, the probation period may be extended if the teacher’s performance is unsatisfactory. This propagation period is very vital and should be taken seriously. Remember, the Commission may be forced to terminate the teacher’s employment at this phase.
After three years of service, the teacher is automatically promoted to job group L currently known as grade C3.
In new reform measures, being implemented by TSC, the new teachers will start receiving their salaries at the end of the first month of their employment.
Under the new reforms, the teachers’ employer has introduced an online system to cut delays in the disbursement of teachers’ salaries.
Currently, the minimum requirement for one to teach in secondary school is a diploma, the majority of secondary school tutors are university graduates.
Under job group K (grade C2), the teacher enjoys a rental house allowance and commuter allowance of 7,500 shillings and 5,000 shillings respectively. Though, the amount of House allowance differs as per the SRC scales. Teachers working in hardship areas also receive hardship allowances.
Break down | Amount (Kshs) |
Basic Salary | 34955.00 |
Rental House Allowance | 7,500.00 |
Commuter Allowance | 5,000.00 |
Total Earnings (Before deductions) | 47,455.00 |
After all, deductions have been affected, the newly employed graduate teacher takes home 38,000 shillings. Remember that this amount does not apply to those who are being deducted HELB Loan.
According to TSC Secretary Dr. Nancy Macharia, teachers will now, henceforth, report under new online reform measures currently being implemented by the Commission, which allows them to receive their salaries at the end of the first month.
The reporting system for the new teachers is expected to end delays in processing their first month’s payment from the initial three months to just one.
