KMTC campuses - Kshs 200 million to establish two new campuses in Kakamega County

Kakamega County Government is set to establish two new KMTC campuses at a cost of Kshs 100 million in the 2017/2018 financial year. Kshs 100 million more will be injected into the development of the campuses in the next financial year

The establishment of the new campuses is aimed at addressing the critical shortage of health workers in the County, according to the County Governor Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya.

To be established at Igukhu and Mumias, the two Campuses will bring to five the total number of KMTC Campuses in the County. In addition, land has been set aside for KMTC for a rural training site next to Shamakhubu Level Four Hospital. Campuses already established are Kakamega, Lugari and Vihiga.

This was agreed during a meeting held in Kakamega on September 13, 2017 between the County Government of Kakamega led by Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya and KMTC led by CEO Peter Tum.

The county is in the process of establishing a Kshs 6 billion state-of-the-art Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital. “We will continue supporting the county to meet its goals of training enough health personnel for its hospitals,” the CEO assured the Governor

At Igukhu, 10 acres of land have been set aside for a new campus. Area Member of Parliament Hon. Benjamin Shinali has pledged to purchase 10 more for construction of hostels.

Adjacent to Mumias Hospital, 10 acres have been set aside for the development of yet another KMTC campus. The area MP has allocated 7 Million for purchasing an extra 10 acres for construction of a students’ hostel in the area.

The Collaboration of the two entities is therefore important given the need of the county for medical personnel across all cadres.
