Step by Step Guide on how to file Tax returns for nemployed/students

Step 1

Visit KRA portal where you will enter your KRA Pin or USER ID.  Enter and log in  with your iTax password. If you have forgotten your password, retrieve  one  using „ FORGOT PASSWORDテ「竄ャナク option on the  bottom right of the iTax portal page.

Step 2

After Login. You will be directed to a page that has a red top menu as shown below.

Place your cursor (mouse pointer) on the ‘RETURNS” page and a drop down menu will appear. Below the drop down menu you will see “FILE  NILL RETRUNS.” For the unemployed that is where you are supposed to click and you will be directed to a page that looks like the one below.

Fill by entering:

  • Tax obligation: Income Tax-Resident Individual

The click Next and you be directed a page like this below

Fill by entering:

  • Wife Pin: (Leave blank if you don’t have one  filing returns)
  • Return Period: 01/01/2017
  • Return Period: 31/12/2017 (this section will fill itself automatically once you click the small calendar on the right)

Click Submit.  On successful submission, the message below will be displayed:

Click download Returns Receipt to download. You are done after downloading.

You have until June 30 2018 to file your tax returns.

Can i make a payment before filing a return?

Yes you can. Payments of taxes and filing returns have been delinked. However any return that does not have a matching payment will automatically attract penalty and interests.

How do I make a payment?

The taxpayer will first generate a payment registration number (PRN) on their iTax profile. The printed PRN will then be taken to the bank together with the mode of payment (Cash, Cheque or RTGS)

What is a Payment Registration Number?

Payment Registration Number or PRN replaces the manual tax payment stationeries such as P11 and VAT3. PRN is generated electronically and is bar coded with unique serial number for every transaction. The PRN must be quoted when making payments to allow taxpayer ledger to be updated. PRN will expire in 7 days if not utilised.

How do I generate a PRN?

On the taxpayers profile, go to Payments then register payment. Fill in the electronic form first by selecting the taxhead. Once all the mandatory fields (marked with red stars) have been filled submit to generate PRN

Can I pay taxes through my local bank?

Yes as long as your bank has an agreement with KRA. Currently KRA has made arrangements with 27 banks. Other banks are still coming in and it is expected that once iTax is rolled out all banks will be in iTax.

What do I do if I made payments but I cannot see them on my iTax ledger?

This mainly happens if payments are outside iTax platform i.e. without generating a PRN or not quoting the PRN when executing payment. The taxpayer should provide the payment documents to KRA for back office reconciliation.

To make a WHT payment you need to click on the payment registration then select income tax on the tax head then select WHT and generate a payment slip by adding the taxpayers that you have withheld their payment.
