The word lent to the Christian word has two meanings: 1) a means to serve or receive one who is in need, and 2) a term for payment or something in return. Lent refers to the 40 day period in between Advent and Pentecost, and corresponds (according to the ancient Church) to the 40 days that Christ was crucified for the forgiveness of sins. It is a season of prayer, penance, and study. Lent began a month of fasting, and Christians from early Christian times were expected to fast during Lent. Most of them were called Christians. The day of the week was not determined until the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. In 431 the day of the week was defined on the basis of the position of the stars. The first Sunday of Lent is the Sunday after Pentecost, hence the name Sunday. But some early theologians argued that there should be a day of prayer preceding the Sunday of the week. Some scholars believe that the first Sunday of Lent was designated by the apostle Peter to commemorate his last day at Jerusalem when he preached the Gospel. There is some dispute about this. The Church has had a definite day of worship for several hundred years. The church in Rome designated the first Sunday of Lent (September 1) as the date of Advent. The first Sunday of Lent has been recognized in all Christian church calendars as the day of prayer, penance, and fasting. The New Year is also a major public feast day, but not a fasting day.
