What you need

The 20 digit token  number

At the meter installed at your premise:-

  1. Key in the 20 digit number on the token using the keypad and press enter
  2. On the screen an ACCEPT message will be displayed and your units will be increased with the amount of electricity purchased
  3. If the screen displays a USED message, it means that the token has already been used.
  4. If the screen display an OLD message, it means the token is old and invalid
  5. If the screen displays a REJECT message, it means that there is something wrong with your token.  In this case you must contact KPLC call center on the numbers provided
  6. Always check that your meter has enough electricity units left. This information is displayed on the screen.
  7. A low credit alarm will be shown when the credit falls below 20 Kwhrs. Please purchase more electricity when this happens to avoid your power going off.

If the token was entered incorrectly the display will indicate “EEEEE 13”

What happens to my current electricity deposit when i install a prepaid meter?

How will the Kenya Power technician be identified?

 

Kenya Power technician will come in a team and bear a company identification card. He will also have a prepayment meter, which will be used to replace the existing credit meter.

 

 

 

 

 

Once the new prepaid meter is installed, will the Kenya Power technicians still come to read my meter?

 

No, meter reading is not necessary in prepayment metering system. However, our Kenya Power technicians will be visiting customer premises from time to time to carryout inspections as required by law.

 

 

 

 

If I have an overdue bill, will my electricity be shut off when the technician comes to install the new meter?

 

No, your electricity will not be shut off; however, you should endeavour to clear the debt prior to conversion, otherwise the bill will be transferred to the prepayment system. If the transfer occurs, on subsequent purchase of electricity, a portion of your payment will be deducted and used to reduce the arrears.

 

 

 

 

 

Will my electricity be shut off when the credit runs out?

 

Yes, your electricity will be shut off (disconnected) when your credit runs out. However, the meter will give a warning when the credit falls below 20Kwhrs. When faced with this situation it is advisable to top up your credit so as to avoid disconnection.

 

 

 

 

What happens if prepaid pay points are closed?

 

You can purchase prepaid credit and post a payment to your account at anytime by calling 0711031000 or 0732111000 or 020-3201000 KPLC Call Centre telephone numbers.

 

 

 

 

 

How do I obtain a credit?

 

You may obtain credit from existing Kenya Power pay points e.g. Electricity House and Stima Plaza, plus other 3rd party vendors such as Uchumi, Airtel and Safaricom (M-PESA) so as to improve purchase convenience to the customer.

 

 

 

 

How does prepaid metering benefit me?

 

In case of a disconnection, you can refill the service without paying an additional deposit. It also enables you manage your power consumption.

 

 

 

 

 

How do prepaid meters work?

 

A customer purchases electricity token and credit units to his meter by typing a given code on the meter’s customer interface unit screen. As the customer uses electricity, his/her credit balance is reduced each day until the units are exhausted prompting the customer to top it up.

 

 

 

 

What is prepaid power meter?

 

It is a type of meter with a customer interface unit that has a screen resembling that of a mobile phone which allows customers to manage their power consumption the same way they manage credit units for their mobile phones.

 

 

 

 

 

How are bills computed?

 

From units consumed each month. These units are recorded by an electricity meter installed at a customers premises. There are bye-laws which specify the applicable tarrif and rate per unit. Specific government levies like Value Added Tax (VAT) and Rural Electrification Fund (REF) are applicable.

How do I query a bill?

 

You can query your bill at  any of our banking halls around the country. Please confirmed your current meter readings (simply take the reading from the meter installed in your premises). This will give any our staff assisting you an idea of just how much power you have consumed.

Where do I pay my bill?

 

At any Kenya Power banking hall or paying point. (Cheque deposit boxes are also available at specific points).

• Immediate update of bill payments. This is a departure from the past where payments through our third party EasyPay partners would take over 24 hours to be captured and reflected in the system.

• Introduction of new bill payment channels such as use of credit and debit cards. This will be in addition to already existing EasyPay partners.

• Introduction of Self-service modules where customers can apply for electricity connection, query bills, check statements, download and print bill statements, check consumption patterns/trends, lodge queries on power supply among others.

• Improve response time as customers can report incidents through the new system.

From there select “Lipa na M-PESA“
Next is to choose “Pay Bill“ option
Input “Enter Business number“ followed by the KPLC’s Lipa na M-PESA PayBill Number which is 888880 and then press “OK”
Pick the option “Enter Account number“, then input your KPLC Prepaid Meter Number, verify it and press “OK”
Input the amount and press “OK”
Input your M-PESA PIN and then press “OK”
Verify that all the details are correct and press “OK” if they are.
